DEEP & TECH HOUSE (May 2011)

Reviewed by  Louis Hughes’

Nikola Gala – Oasy - Claap Recs

Can you imagine being in a smoke filled dark warehouse at 5am with 200 like minded individuals going nuts while the DJ takes it up a notch?  Can you imagine the DJ twisting out deep techy grooves and working the floor and making every individual scream for more?  Well if you answered yes to both questions then this is the type of track that would be in rotation.  Sitting somewhere between New York, Detroit and Berlin ‘Osay’ manages to epitomise what Underground music is all about with quality dirty percussion, repetitive stabs and a rising vocals building to a crescendo of House music.

Yse ft. Frank H. Carter III - Guessing Games - Lost My Dog

Just over a year since ‘Guessing Games’ first appeared on Lost My Dog’s ‘Miami 2010 Sampler’ it finally gets a full release with a quality package.  Up first is the original reworked for 2011 and an instrumental thrown in for good measure.  Deep beats, lush pads and Frank’s soulful vocals make this an instant classic.  Next up is the man of the moment Giom with a more club friendly remix that ticks all the boxes and will be heard in many a set.  Yse teams up with production partner Matt Rivem for the next mix with a Rhythm Plate Dub which really is a master class of Underground House music and my personal favourite off the release.  Finally there are two remix from garage legend Karl ‘Tuff Enough’ Brown marking a new direction for the label and bringing a UK Garage feel to the track.  Overall this is a very strong package from one of the most consistent labels around.

Tuccillo – Disco En Paradiso EP - Rebirth

Italian label Rebirth have been on a bit of a roll of late with the roster reading like a who’s who of Underground, Deep and Tech House stars.  Here Tuccillo makes his debut on the imprint after outings on respected labels such as Freerange, Yourba, Circus Company and Drumpoet Community.  Delivering a two track EP in some style ‘Invisible’ is a deep 123bpm monster with minimal beats, a warm atmosphere and a rolling bassline making it a sublime piece of music.  The title track ‘Disco En Paradiso’ is little more aimed at the bigger room with a 90’s Balearic disco feel.  Good stuff!

Various Artists – Five To The Floor-Round 2 (Elevation Records)

Here comes the second sampler in the series on the ever impressive Elevation records.  Zoe Xenia delivers a nice deep house track called ‘I Know you can’ with a nice vox and subtle pads.  Mark Mywords track ‘Priorities’ is a percussive driven jam while Carlo’s ‘She is gone’ has more of a deep tech feel.  ‘Too late to stay’ by Paulo Olarte has some nice synth interplay before a classic piano groove kicks in and Jeanm’s ‘Dancing Jo’ finishes off the package with a deep builder.  Five to the floor 2 is a nice solid package with some good DJ tools.

Kruse & Nuernberg ft Nathalie Claude – Silk Sky – Lazy Days

After outings on labels such as Kolour, NRK and Slip N’ Slide Kruse & Nuernberg make their second appearance on Lazy Days.  Nice haunting vocals and deep pads give the original a nice summery feel perfect for Ibiza sunset cocktails.  There is also an instrumental available just in case the vocals are not for you.  ‘Mamas Garden’ is their second track on the package which is a straight up Deep House spoken word groover.  Finally Label boss Fred Everything offers a vocal and dub remix of the title track ‘Silk Sky’ with his lazy dub being the pick of the package for me.
